Migrating from InnoDB - Foreign keys?

I have read in FAQ that there is no support of foreign keys in infinidb right now.

Are there any plans to add such a feature? I use it a lot to keep database consistent without doing many checks before any delete statement or deleting many rows from many tables by hand.

Of course I can write triggers to do that, and possibly will do if I'll decide to migrate some databases to infinidb, but would be nice to know your opinion.

Re:Migrating from InnoDB - Foreign keys?

Hi -

First, thanks for downloading and trying InfiniDB.

To be honest, FK's haven't been a priority item on our roadmap as of yet. That doesn't mean they couldn't become one, but today we haven't gotten many requests for them. In addition, most large DW's don't use FK's because of the enforcement penalty that's paid for having them.

So the nit of it is, for 2010, we won't have FK's in the database. However, if we get more cries for them, we'll certainly respond so anyone else reading this who wants FK's, please make your voice heard!

Thanks for the answer.

I'm possibly unusual user here, cause I don't manage any huge DW'ses, but am instead a web-developer that sometimes run in a need for creating websites running under huge load, where database has to have good respond times and be reliable, and that's why I'm interesting in trying out infinidb here and there since I read about it.

On the other hand in such systems having FKs logic on the database side simplifies the application a lot in some situations, so I'm using it a lot.

Anyway - I will be surely watching closely what happens here and you will surely hear feedback from any of my more important tryouts.

NO FOREIGN KEYS???

I agree that for DW'ses FK's are not really relevant, but I see MANY more applications for InfiniDB than DW'ses only.

In general I think InfiniDB is appropriate for "Write Few, Read Many" applications, which, in my view, is the bulk of administrative & web applications!

For these applications the lack of FK's is probably a knock-out criterium!!

Please put this basic feature on your roadmap...

Re:NO FOREIGN KEYS???

Thank you very much for your interest in InfiniDB.

We do have Foreign Keys on our roadmap but it is not targeted for our next release which is coming out in April. We will be adding this feature in the future.

Thank you,

Robert
