Calpont InfiniDB Recognized in the 2013 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse Database Management Systems

Nick Ochoa Vice President, Marketing, Calpont

Thank you to our customers who took the time to participate and provide the data required for Gartner to complete their research for the 2013 Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse Database Management Systems (MQ DWDBMS). It’s a lengthy process to provide Gartner analysts with the necessary insights about products, and their respective markets, to create the Magic Quadrant.

Since launching the first version of InfiniDB in 2010, Calpont has made great strides in the Big Data marketplace. Being included in the 2013 MQ DWDBMS is a testament to the success that our customers have had since that time. The customers that participated in this report were those that have licensed InfiniDB Enterprise. It did not include the thousands that have downloaded, installed and deployed the community version of InfiniDB. Being our first year in the report, we are happy to be acknowledged as one of the important vendors and influencers in the industry.

From the report, Calpont was recognized for the following strengths:

  • Targeted regions and markets
  • Technology partners and big data
  • Multiple pricing options
  • Ease of deployment and use
  • Above-average value

How vendors and their products are assessed in this report can be a bit challenging to understand. The reason is that larger companies, like IBM, have multiple products that fit the MQ DWDBMS criteria, but are grouped together and evaluated as a single entity. Whereas, Calpont’s evaluation solely includes InfiniDB.

The 2013 MQ DWDBMS report provides a summary look at a complex market. The lens and context that underlies the research is a march toward what Gartner terms the “logical data warehouse”. (The logical data warehouse is described here by Gartner in a blog from Merv Adrian and Mark Beyer). The vision for the logical data warehouse is a lofty one, with not one of the participating vendors having yet achieved it in Gartner’s eyes. All have parts of a solution, but none a comprehensive one to address it.

The focus for InfiniDB is high-performance, large scale structured analytics and BI, regardless of whether underlying a traditional data warehouse, federation of data marts, an ad-hoc analytic data store, or as part of a logical data warehouse. The product is designed for query performance, scalability and consistency to address Big Data analytics. If you’re searching for a solution with these characteristics, plus ease-of-use and deployment, and the ability to drop into a heterogeneous Big Data environment to complement Hadoop and NoSQL workloads, then InfiniDB is worth a long look.
